A truly scary story

The Yellow Wallpaper - Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Elaine Hedges

I remember reading this for an English class in high-school. We also listened to the audio-book and the atmosphere this story created still makes me shudder.

The yellow wallpaper is a short story about a woman that according to everyone around her, is suffering from depression. However, this is far from the truth as she is actually insane, slowly becoming obsessed with the yellow wallpaper in the room her husband is keeping her:

❝ I really have discovered something at last. Through watching so much at night, when it changes so, I have finally found out. The front pattern does move - and no wonder! The woman behind shakes it! Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over. Then in the very ' bright spots she keeps still, and in the very shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard. And she is all the time trying to climb through. But nobody could climb through that pattern - it strangles so:...❞

You get to experience the woman's mind giving in to insanity and this is what makes this a horror story. Because, after all, the most terrifying things are in the dark corners of our minds...
